Sakurazumi — 桜 (sakura, cherry blossom) 墨 (zumi, ink) — is an oil-smoke ink refined over 400 years of ink-making at Kobaien, built for soothing, generous colour across large sheets of paper: the black deepens fast and rubs down easily on the stone, dark strokes settling into a warm black, lighter ones into a soft brownish tone.
One Western-style painter put it best: these warm blacks recall the bistre Rembrandt once worked with, and he suspected Rembrandt himself would have been fascinated by Kobaien's craft. It is an ink that speaks equally to washi and to the European painting tradition it now sits quietly alongside.
