1 star Koukaboku inkstick ( 一星紅花墨 )

Koukaboku's story starts the same way at every star: in 1739, Kobaien's sixth head, Matsui Motoyasu, travelled to Nagasaki to study ink-making with masters of Qing China — and "the ink of flowers" was born from that exchange.

But one-star Koukaboku is ground from Kobaien's own mineral-based soot rather than rapeseed oil, and it is honest about what it is: a light, gentle black at full strength, best kept for dark ink work rather than pale washes.

It is not the ink to reach for when you want the drama of a deep charcoal line, but for daily practice — running through paper, warming up the hand before a real sitting — it is dependable in a way few things are.

One long-time sumi-e painter simply calls it consistent, easy even for a beginner. Sometimes that is exactly the quality worth having.
