During Japan's era of self-imposed isolation, Nagasaki was the nation's only doorway to the outside world — the sole port open to

Chinese traders. It was there, in 1739, that Kobaien's sixth master worked alongside visiting Qing ink craftsmen, producing Koukaboku: ink born from a rare moment of cross-border exchange, and still Kobaien's flagship ink today.
