Product information

Koukaboku — 紅花墨, "the ink of flower" — traces back to 1739, when Kobaien's sixth head, Matsui Motoyasu, travelled to Nagasaki and worked alongside Qing-dynasty ink craftsmen; what came out of that exchange became one of Kobaien's finest ink families.

The 2-star grade, made from Kobaien's own mineral oil, is prized above all for its smoothness on the stone. It is an honest ink: pushed dark, it gives a clean light black, and it makes no claim to elegance in pale washes — this is a stick built for confident, well-defined strokes, not for chasing subtlety in a thin wash.

The meaning of the product name is as follows:

二 ( futatsu : two )

星 ( hoshi : star )

紅 ( kou : crimson )

花 ( ka: flower )

墨 ( boku : ink )

In 1739, Matsui,Motoyasu, the sixth successor of Kobaien, went to Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan.

There he interacted with ink craftsmen of the Qing dynasty and collaborated with them on the production of ink. Koukaboku is one of the best inks born from that study.

Koukaboku is also known as “Ohanzumi ( The ink of flower ) “. Seien, five-star and four-star Koukaboku inks are made from rapeseed oil. Three-star, two-star, and one-star Koukaboku inks are made from Kouba-en’s original mineral oil.
