3 Star Koukaboku is an oil-smoke ink made from rapeseed oil smoke and fine glue.

When used as a dark ink color, it produces a light black color. It is not suitable for applications that use light ink.

    三 ( mitsu : three )

    星 ( hoshi : star )

    紅 ( kou : crimson )

    花 ( ka: flower )

    墨 ( boku : ink )

In 1739, Matsui,Motoyasu, the sixth successor of Kobaien, went to Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan.

There he interacted with  ink craftsmen of the Qing dynasty and collaborated with them on the production of ink. Koukaboku is one of the best inks born from that study.

Koukaboku is also known as “Ohanzumi ( The ink of flower ) “. Seien, five-star and four-star Koukaboku inks are made from rapeseed oil. Three-star, two-star, and one-star Koukaboku inks are made from Kouba-en’s original mineral oil.

    Easy and smooth

This is one of the inksticks I am using to practice grinding on an inkstone and using brushes. It is very smooth and grinds well! The price feels worth it, I ordered the 0.5 size. I definitely recommend, especially if you have a really little inkstone like myself. The stick itself looks high quality and was packaged well.

How does KOBAIEN ( 古梅園 ) make sumi inksticks in Japan?

    How do you grind inksticks?

Ms. Junko Azukawa, a contemporary calligrapher and ink painter in Australia, explains how to use stickinks.
