Why does the inkstick from Kobaien smell so good?

There is a phrase that everyone who uses Kobaien's inksticks for the first time says: “What a wonderful smell !!”.

Do you know why?

This is a scent of borneol.

Let's take a brief look at how inksticks are made. Inksticks are made from three ingredients: soot, glue and fragrance.

After kneading soot and melted glue together with water, the mixture is then mixed with fragrance and placed in a wooden mold to dry.

In this way, solid inksticks are made.

The Making Process of Kobaien Inksticks

Once upon a time, when Kobaien started making inksticks, the artisans at Kobaien used various types of glue in the production process, and they found that some of them had a rather unpleasant smell.

Basically, in ancient Japan, writing documents using inksticks was the job of the nobility, so they needed a scent that would help them concentrate without disturbing them in their work.

The artisans at Kobaien therefore adopted the use of borneol. This fragrance also has a calming effect on the person grinding the inkstick.
