Koyubi — 古 (ko, old), 隃麋 (yubi, name of a mountain) — takes its name from Mount Yubi in China, once said to hold a pine garden so bound up with ink-making that the mountain's name became synonymous with ink itself.
Made from ultra-fine rapeseed oil soot and vintage Chinese glue, this piece was produced in 1960 — a genuine koboku, decades into the slow maturing that only time can give an inkstick.
Fatima Alzaabi, using it for calligraphy, called it perfect, praising its colour and glossiness, and found it especially striking for small work, where that sheen catches beautifully on the page.
