Kokei Sanshou takes its name from an old Chinese proverb, 虎 (ko, tiger) 渓 (kei, brook) 三 (san, three) 笑 (shou, laughing) — "Three Laughs at Tiger Brook," the tale of three friends so absorbed in conversation that they forgot everything else, even the boundary they'd sworn never to cross.
Made from canola-oil soot and fine glue, the ink spreads beautifully across the page: an elegant black at full strength, a strangely three-dimensional black when thinned, well suited to work on large sheets of paper — the kind of ink that might make you forget yourself too.
