Byakudan Ryuun — 白檀 (byakudan, sandalwood) added to Kobaien's Ryuun, "dragon cloud" — is the house's finest liquid ink, made from ultra-fine oil smoke closer in character to a ground inkstick than to ordinary bottled sumi.
Dark, it carries the depth of lacquer ink; thinned, it takes on the tone of old ink, with a clear base line and soft blotching that gives real dimension on the page, all wrapped in the quiet scent of sandalwood.
One customer called both this liquid and Kobaien's inksticks wonderful enough that she now orders from nowhere else; another simply wrote "extraordinary quality," and a third named it their new favourite ink for its beautiful, solid blacks.
