Cho Kou Yuen Boku spells itself out character by character: Cho (猪), boar; Kou (膠), glue; Yu (煙), oil; En (煙), smoke; Boku (墨), ink — a name that's really an ingredient list, and an unusual one.
Wild boar glue is rare in inkstick-making, and Kobaien uses it here specifically for how well the ink extends across paper, giving calligraphers a longer, more even reach from a single stroke of the brush without the color thinning out or breaking up.
It's built with calligraphy in mind first, but that same even color extension is the kind of quality sumi-e painters look for when they want a wash to move smoothly across a large area rather than pooling unevenly.
It comes in two sizes: a 2 at 31.8mm wide, 117.2mm long, 10.2mm thick and 58 grams, and a larger 3 at 32.5mm wide, 133.4mm long, 11.7mm thick and 75 grams — worth choosing the larger stick if you plan to grind enough ink for bigger, uninterrupted passages.
