Zuishou takes its name from 瑞祥, meaning good omen — a name that carries a small blessing into the work made with it.
Made from a blend of horse and goat hair by Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine. it combines the springy structure of horse hair with the softer absorbency of goat, a pairing that tends to hold a generous amount of ink while still keeping enough resilience to spring back into shape between strokes.
At 270mm overall, with a substantial 60.0mm head and 15.3mm thickness, it has real presence in the hand, suited to bolder sumi-e strokes and larger calligraphy work rather than fine detail.
As with all Tanaka's brushes, expect small natural variations since each is shaped entirely by hand, and about a week for inspection before shipping.
