Chiyomi Tanaka is one of only seven certified Japanese brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman who was featured by The New York Times Style Magazine.
"Touka-Ryusui" takes its name from two images sumi-e painters know well: Touka (桃花), peach blossom, and Ryusui (流水), running river — a name that evokes soft color against a moving current.
This is a horse-and-goat hair brush handmade by Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans working in Nara today, and the only woman among them to be profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine.
At 280mm overall, with a 61.0mm brush head and 12.6mm thickness, it's built for the fluid transitions — soft washes fading into finer lines — that sumi-e and calligraphy both call for.
Because each brush is shaped by hand, one at a time, small variations in size and weight are part of the piece rather than a flaw; expect roughly a week for Tanaka to inspect and finish yours before it ships.
