Jun Shouen-boku Shouen Shin-boku — 純 (jun, pure) 松 (shou) 煙 (en, smoke) 墨 (boku, ink), 真 (shin, true) — is a bluish sumi inkstick made from the smoke of the finest pine bark, its particles ultra-fine, its surface finished in gold and carved with a peach blossom, the old Chinese symbol of love and prosperity.

Kobaien applies gold leaf for three reasons: for beauty, for preservation since gold resists chemical change over long years, and for practice — calligraphers have long said gold particles smooth the brush's glide, making it especially suited to Kuzushiji, Japanese cursive script.

A quietly symbolic piece, blue-toned and gilded, waiting to be ground.
