Shiun takes its name from 紫雲, purple cloud, a phrase long associated with good fortune — a small blessing carried into whatever this brush is used to create.
Made from a blend of horse and goat hair by Chiyomi Tanaka one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine., it pairs horse hair's resilience with goat's soft absorbency, a combination that tends to hold ink generously while still snapping back into shape between strokes.
At 340mm overall, with a 67.2mm head and 15.1mm thickness, it has real presence for sumi-e and calligraphy work of some ambition.
This is currently the only one of its kind in stock, available for pre-order.
As with all Tanaka's brushes, expect small natural variations, and please check your country's import regulations before ordering.
