Ofude takes its name simply from Dai (大), large, and Fude (筆), brush — a straightforward name for what is, in every sense, a substantial one.
Handmade by
Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by
The New York Times Style Magazine, it blends wool, horse, and raccoon dog (tanuki) hair, a three-material mix built for real presence on the page.
At 390mm overall, with a 94.4mm head and 22.7mm thickness, it's sized for bold, large-scale sumi-e or expansive calligraphy rather than fine detail.
Currently the only one in stock, available for pre-order. As with all Tanaka's brushes, expect small natural variations since each is shaped entirely by hand, and please check your country's import regulations before ordering; note this item cannot currently be shipped to the USA.
