Myouou takes its name from a Buddhist deity — Myou (明) meaning "bright," Ou (王) meaning "king" — who acts on the command of Dainichi Nyorai, the highest deity in esoteric Buddhism, to subdue demons and protect the faith.
This inkstick channels some of that same discipline: Kobaien makes it by extracting oil smoke from rapeseed oil and blending it with a plant-based pigment chosen specifically for its suitability in blue-toned ink.
The result is a calm, composed black rather than a stark one — natural indigo is worked into the mix to hold the tone back from anything too extreme, giving painters a steady, faintly bluish black to build washes and gradations on.
At 107mm long, 22mm wide, 8mm thick, and 30g, it sits comfortably in the hand for both calligraphy and ink-wash work. It's a quiet inkstick with a formidable name — fitting for anyone who wants their sumi to carry a bit of protective weight alongside its colour.
