Manyo takes its name from two characters — Man (万), "ten thousand," and You (葉), "leaves" — a name with the same quiet, poetic ring as the flowing kana script this brush is built to write.
Handmade by
Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by
The New York Times Style Magazine., Manyo is a small brush made from high-quality weasel hair blended with deer and wool.
The tip is soft, tuned for the light touch and quick, cursive rhythm that kana calligraphy asks for — the kind of brush suited to writing that moves like handwriting rather than architecture.
At 215mm overall, with a 30mm brush head and just 7mm thickness, it's compact and precise, easy to control for fine, connected strokes.
As with all of Tanaka's brushes, each is shaped individually by hand, so expect small natural variations in size and weight, and about a week for inspection before shipping.
Since it's made with natural animal hair, please check your country's import regulations before ordering; note this item currently cannot be shipped to the United States.
