Koseki inkstick ( Bluish black, Pine smoke 壺石 松園墨 )

Koseki — 壺 (ko, jar) 石 (seki, stone) — is ikimatsu, soot gathered by burning pine tree oil rather than the finer particles of ordinary oil-smoke inks.

That coarser grain is exactly what gives it away: pushed dark, the black comes out bright and full, but thinned, it opens into a faint, mysterious blue few other inks can match.

And it doesn't stay still — pine-soot ink is said to grow bluer the longer it's left to age, so what you buy today is only the beginning of what this stick will become.
