Kinsenzairei — 金 (kin, gold) 千 (sen, thousand) 歳 (sai, years old) 苓 (rei, licorice) — takes its name from Senzairei, a term for a thousand-year-old licorice fungus that also carries the meaning of prosperity and happiness.
Made from superb rapeseed oil, pushed dark it turns glossy black, thinned it settles into a brownish black — a stick considered especially suited to painting.
Kobaien applies gold leaf, or Kinmaki, for three reasons: for beauty, for preservation since gold resists chemical change over long years, and for practice — calligraphers have long said gold particles smooth the brush's glide, making it especially suited to Kuzushiji, Japanese cursive script.
