Kinrangiku takes its name from Kin (金), gold, Ran (蘭), orchid, and Giku (菊), chrysanthemum — a name as ornamental as the stick itself.
Made from superb rapeseed oil, it settles into a glossy black at full strength, opening into a warm brownish black when thinned, and is considered especially well suited to painting. Its gold leaf serves three purposes: beauty, protection from chemical change so the ink's quality holds over long periods, and — as generations of Japanese calligraphers have found — a smoother glide for the brush, particularly for Kuzushiji cursive script.
At 30mm wide, 111mm long, 10mm thick, and 50 grams, it's a substantial, elegant stick built for serious work.
For anyone drawn to the interplay of orchid and chrysanthemum motifs with real gold-leaf craft, Kinrangiku brings a quiet luxury to the inkstone.
