Kin Ryuhou — 金 (Kin, gold), 龍鳳 (Ryuhou, dragon and phoenix, a term for a person of exceptional genius) — is a wonderful inkstick made from the smoke of the finest canola oil with ultra-fine particles, finished in gold leaf and suited to calligraphy.
Kobaien applies gold leaf for three reasons: for beauty, for preservation since gold resists chemical change over long years, and for practice — calligraphers have long said gold particles smooth the brush's glide, making it especially suited to Kuzushiji, Japanese cursive script.
A small, gilded stick carrying the name once reserved for the rarest of talents, waiting to be ground for a hand equal to it.
