Chiyomi Tanaka is one of only seven certified Japanese brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman who was featured by The New York Times Style Magazine.

"Kenmo Dai Kana Joufuku" spells out exactly what this brush is built for: Kenmo (兼毛) means "mixed hair," Dai (大) is "large," Kana (仮名) refers to the flowing Japanese script, and Joufuku (条幅) means the large hanging-scroll paper calligraphers write on.

Together, the name is practically an instruction manual — a big, mixed-hair brush for writing kana on large sheets.

Handmade by Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine, this brush blends wool with horse tail hair for bristles with just enough spring to carry kana's long, looping strokes across a full sheet without losing their rhythm.

At 280mm overall, with a 42mm brush head and 9mm thickness, it has the reach and body suited to joufuku-scale work.

Because Tanaka shapes each brush by hand, expect small natural variations in size and weight — part of working with a living craft rather than a factory line — and about a week for her to inspect and finish before shipping.
