This type of inkstick is called "ikimatsu". It is made from soot produced by burning pine tree oil.

The particles of its soot are not as fine as those of inksticks made from oil smoke, so when the color is lightened, a faint bluish tint is produced.

It has a bright black color when painting dark blacks and a gentle, faint blue color when painting light blacks that look very mysterious.

It is said that the more years pass, the bluer the ink from the pine tree becomes.
