An inkstone, over time, quietly clogs — paper fibres and glue residue from the ink settle into its microscopic surface, and a clogged stone can no longer draw out a truly clean colour from the ink.
This natural mud-slate whetstone, fine enough to match a 4000-grit finish, is made specifically to restore that surface, and as you work it, its particles break down further, effectively shifting through several grades of finish in a single piece.

How to use
- Soak the inkstone in water for about an hour, and the whetstone itself for about five minutes.
This softens both surfaces and helps prevent scratching.
- Fill the inkstone's grinding surface with a little water.
- Gently rub the whetstone against the inkstone, always keeping the two surfaces parallel to one another.
- As you polish, brown particles will come away from the whetstone — this is normal. Do not rinse them off; they're part of what does the polishing, gradually breaking down into finer grains that refine the surface further as you continue.
- Continue polishing carefully to clear the deposits from the inkstone's microscopic surface, restoring it to a condition where it can once again produce a clean, even ink colour.
