Tenpyo ( 天平 )  — "infinite sky" — is a natural-stone inkstone, and its purpose is simple: to let a good ink do its work undisturbed.

Cut from stone whose surface resists wearing down over years of grinding, it holds its grain and its bite through long use, rather than smoothing itself away and losing the friction an inkstick needs.

It is not made by Kobaien, but it is the kind of quiet, well-made surface an inkstick like Koukaboku or Seien deserves to be worked against — steady underfoot, so that all the character in the ink can come through in the line.

The size is 137 millimetre ( 5.31 inch ) in length, 78 millimetre( 3.07 inch ) in width, and the thickness is 21 millimetre ( 0.83 inch ) .

Weight is about 400gram ( 14.1 ounce ) excluding wrapping material weight .
