Tenbi Fude takes its name plainly from its materials — Tenbi (天尾), horse tail, and Fude (筆), brush — a straightforward name for a brush made entirely from horse tail hair.
Handmade by Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine., it draws on horse tail's natural springiness, a quality that tends to hold a crisp edge and snap back readily between strokes, well suited to lively, energetic linework.
At 280mm overall, with a 60.2mm head and 12.9mm thickness, it has enough substance in hand for confident sumi-e or calligraphy strokes without feeling heavy.
Currently only two of this brush remain in stock, so it's an easy one to miss if you wait.
As with all Tanaka's brushes, expect small natural variations since each is shaped entirely by hand, and about a week for inspection before shipping.
Made from natural animal hair, so please check your country's import regulations before ordering.
This brush is the only two in stock.
