Shourai — 松 (shou, pine) 籟 (rai, cone) — means simply "pinecone," and the ink inside lives up to that quiet, natural image: rapeseed oil-smoke worked together with the plant pigment best suited to blue ink, yielding a calm, vivid bluish black that never tips into anything extreme.
One painter praised exactly this quality — a blue-tinged black that can be coaxed into a whole range of secondary shades depending on how it's mixed, carrying a faint, refined fragrance as it's ground.
