Shamo ( Gamecock ) feagher brush 軍鶏

Shamo ( 軍鶏, Gamecock ) takes its name from the gamecock, a breed of fighting rooster long kept in Japan, and this brush is made entirely from its feathers rather than the hair used in most Japanese brushes.

Handmade by Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine, it's an unusual piece even within her range of unconventional materials.

At 270mm overall, with a 51.6mm head and just 4.2mm thickness, it's a slim, precise tool — the kind of brush that rewards a light touch, well suited to fine detail work, delicate linework, or textural experiments where the springy, slightly irregular structure of feather behaves differently from soft hair on the paper.

As with all Tanaka's brushes, expect small natural variations since each is shaped entirely by hand, and about a week for inspection before shipping.
