Chiyomi Tanaka is one of only seven certified Japanese brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman who was featured by The New York Times Style Magazine.
Sanbafude takes its name from San (山), mountain, Ba (馬), deer, and Fude (筆), brush — a name for a genuinely rare material, made from the hair of a special deer found in Southeast Asia.
Handmade by Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine, it's built from raw material that's difficult to obtain; imitations circulate, but this is the real thing.
The hair itself is notably bristly, versatile enough for both calligraphy and painting.
At 330mm overall, with a 63.5mm head and 11mm thickness, it offers a distinctive texture unlike more common brush hairs.
