Saikouhou takes its name from Sai (細), narrow, Kou (光), light, and Hou (鋒), the point of a sword — evoking a fine, gleaming tip. Made entirely from the jaw whiskers of young male goats raised only in one narrow stretch of the lower Yangtze River in China, it's built from a genuinely rare material by Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine.
At 300mm overall, with a 69.6mm head and 17mm thickness, it's suited to work demanding real precision at the tip.
One reviewer, on his second Tanaka brush, described feeling that his art carried the spirit of both himself and the artisan who shaped the brush.
