Nishoku Fude spells out its purpose in its name: Nishoku (二色), two colors, and Fude (筆), brush.
It's the kind of name associated with brushes built for loading two tones or pigments at once — a classic sumi-e and nihonga technique for letting one stroke shift gradually from dark to light, or from one hue into another, without lifting the brush from the paper.
This particular brush, made from wool and horse hair, is the only one currently in stock, handmade by Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine..
At 330mm overall, with a substantial 74.8mm brush head and 13.4mm thickness, it has the size and body to hold a generous amount of ink or color, well suited to bold, gradated strokes across larger paper.
As with all Tanaka's brushes, expect small natural variations since it's shaped entirely by hand, and about a week for inspection before it ships. It's made from natural animal hair, so please check your country's import regulations before ordering.
