Koukun — 香 (kou, scent) 君 (kun, noble) — is a red inkstick made using traditional methods, finished with gold leaf.
Kobaien applies gold leaf for three reasons: for beauty, for preservation since gold resists chemical change over long years, and for practice — calligraphers have long said gold particles smooth the brush's glide, making it especially suited to Kuzushiji, Japanese cursive script.
A noble, scented touch of vermilion, small enough to sit quietly beside your black inks until the moment calls for a mark of colour.
