Product information

Kakou Yuen Boku spells itself out character by character: Ka (鹿), deer, Kou (膠), glue, Yu (油), oil, En (煙), smoke, Boku (墨), ink — its own ingredient list doubling as its name.

Deer glue is rare in inkstick-making, and Kobaien uses it here specifically for how well the ink extends across paper, letting a single stroke carry further and more evenly than it would with more common binders, without the color thinning out partway through.

It's built with calligraphy in mind first, tuned for the kind of long, connected strokes that ask a lot of the ink's consistency from beginning to end of a line.

At 23.1mm wide, 88.1mm long, 8.7mm thick, and 31 grams, it's a compact, easy stick to grind for regular practice or shorter calligraphy sessions, small enough to travel with but substantial enough to hold up to daily use.

A quietly technical inkstick from the same family as Kobaien's other rare-glue sticks, built around one uncommon material doing its job very well.
