Hakusui ( 白翠 )  takes its name from the white kingfisher — a small, quick-moving bird known for its bright plumage — and the brush lives up to that image with a blend of wool, white horse belly hair, and tanuki (raccoon dog) fur that's built to be very easy to paint and write with.

Handmade by Chiyomi Tanaka, one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine, it measures 260mm overall, with a 47mm brush head and 11.8mm thickness — a size that moves comfortably between fine calligraphy and looser sumi-e strokes.

One customer called it absolutely top-quality, adding that the customer service and communication were excellent throughout, from a workshop that's been supplying fine ink and brushes for centuries.

As with all Tanaka's brushes, expect small natural variations since each is shaped by hand, and about a week for inspection before shipping.

Made from natural animal hair, so please check your country's import rules before ordering; note this brush currently cannot be shipped to the United States.
