Gyokuryukan — 玉 (gyoku, orb) 龍 (ryu, dragon) 冠 (kan, crown) — is a red inkstick made using traditional methods, finished with gold leaf.
Kobaien applies gold leaf for three reasons: for beauty, for preservation since gold resists chemical change over long years, and for practice — calligraphers have long said gold particles smooth the brush's glide, making it especially suited to Kuzushiji, Japanese cursive script.
Eva Tsang, an artist from Hong Kong who has used the stick, described its shrimp-like colour tone with a shine of gold as an indescribable elegance, and found it especially well suited to painting skin tones.
