Gen — 玄, deep and dark — is made from Kobaien's own oil-smoke soot, giving a liquid ink close in character to one hand-ground from a stick, and counted among the most luxurious liquid inks for serious artwork.

It draws comfortably, sinks into paper with real permeability, and its lighter washes show off the beauty of a soft, blurring edge.

One customer, amazed at the quality, called the black colour beautiful with equally beautiful shades — and noted that even heavily diluted with water, the ink kept its subtlety.
