Not every brush from Chiyomi Tanaka's Nara workshop is meant for ink.
This face brush is a cosmetic tool, made for dusting on face powder or sweeping cheek rouge, and it carries the same handwork as her calligraphy and sumi-e brushes: a hard cedar-wood shaft, each one naturally varied in colour, topped with a soft, high-quality wool tip.
Tanaka is one of only seven certified traditional brush artisans in Nara, Japan, and the only woman among them profiled by The New York Times Style Magazine — credentials earned making writing and painting brushes, and carried over into this small, charming piece.
At 70mm overall with a 25mm-thick head, it's compact enough for a travel pouch or a dressing table, and comes in white or pink.
For calligraphy and sumi-e collectors, it makes an easy, affordable way to bring a bit of the same workshop home without committing to a full painting brush — though it's worth being clear that this one is strictly for the face, not the inkstone.
As with all of Tanaka's brushes, each is shaped by hand, so expect small natural variations, and about a week for inspection before shipping.
Since it's made with natural animal hair, please check your country's import rules before ordering.
